David M. Matsumoto
David M. Matsumoto, SMI Group Senior Advisor, has over 30 years of experience in philanthropy, venture capital, investing and entertainment.
Mr. Matsumoto started his career managing and operating his family business in Japan and elsewhere in real estate, hotel management, import and export. He then added extensive venture capital investing. Mr. Matsumoto co-founded start-ups in the United States, China, Hong Kong and Japan. He has raised more than $2 billion for investment in technology, media, marketing services, energy, real estate and charities.
Among his many philanthropic efforts, Mr. Matsumoto was executive producer for the Global Forum of Spiritual and Parliamentary Leaders on Human Survival, an event created with the support of the United Nations to commemorate its 40th anniversary, in Japan. Prominent leaders who participated in the Global Forum included: the Forum’s chairman, former president of Soviet Union, Mikhail Gorbachev, Mother Teresa, the Dalai Lama, Carl Sagan, Stephen Hawking, former United States vice president Al Gore, Elie Wiesel, Japanese Prime Minister Toshiki Kaifu and the former Secretary General of the United Nations, Javier Perez De Cuellar.
Mr. Matsumoto is Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Nobel Charitable Trust Foundation, a partner to Global Strategic Studies Institute (GSSI), formed with the Saudi royal family and the Al Saud family. The Nobel Charitable Trust Foundation plays a global role in addressing issues of reusable and alternative energy and the environment, and GSSI is the first Saudi Arabian environmental organization. GSSI and its affiliates have offices in London, Riyadh, Jeddah, Dubai and Tokyo. Mr. Matsumoto also is active as an honorary member of the board of the Prince of Wales Charitable Foundation.
The many awards and honors received by Mr. Matsumoto include a Humanitarian Award from Mikhail Gorbachev, and honors from a broad range of charities and governments, including among many others, the Ivory Coast, City of Los Angeles, Braille Institute and the Sickle Cell Anemia and Muscular Dystrophy organizations and Xian and Dun Huang in China.
Mr. Matsumoto was educated in Japan. He resides in Tokyo and travels extensively in Asia, Europe, the Middle East and the United States. Mr. Matsumoto is a Japanese citizen.
